Lock Snapping Protection
Nearly 95% of break-ins and burglaries take place through the back door of a property. It’s rare but occasionally a break-in occurs through a front door but generally only in a secluded or rural property. An increasingly common method of gaining entry among burglars is something called lock snapping.
Most modern UPVC and Composite doors have what is known as multi-point locking mechanisms which feature as you can probably imagine, multiple hooks and latches to ensure a door is as secure as possible, the issue is however that these latches are operated by a standard euro-cylinder style lock and if that lock does not employ or is manufactured without anti-snap features, it becomes the weak point in the whole system.
Lock snapping is a huge risk if you have euro cylinder locks without anti-snap features and if a non-anti-snap featured lock is installed it more or less makes all the multi-point mechanism completely useless.
Lock Snapping has become so bad that it was even featured on the BBC and is now a major issue for the millions of older style euro cylinder locks fitted around the UK that do not have anti-snap technology.
So, What Is This Lock Snapping?
Lock snapping is where a thief uses brute force to snap a lock, basically in half at the weak point and then because the mechanism is now freewheeling, he can turn the lock without a key because the lock is broken.
Anti-Snap locks which are also required by home insurance policies are manufactured in such a way that they cannot easily be snapped. They will carry a British Standard Kite Mark and a security rating in the form of stars. They are the recommended replacement for old style euro cylinders and here at Mr Lock Doc we would say to upgrade to them at the earliest opportunity. Gives you far more peace of mind and security.
With Mr Lock Doc’s local locksmith service, lock snapping is not something to be feared but it’s something you should think about if you have not got or are unsure if you have anti-snap locks fitted. Anti-Snap locks also feature other high security deterrents such as Anti-Bump, Anti-Pick and Anti-Drilling features, so they really are the best you can get in euro cylinder lock technology.
The Locks we fit are anti-snap where possible, are Kite Marked and also carry the TS007:2012 3-star rating but note if your lock has a Kite Mark but does not have the 3 stars it will not be anti-snap tested as it’s an older design of lock.
You may also want to consider fitting high security handles which recess the cylinder within them so burglars cannot easily get tools onto the lock to apply force. Ask Mr Lock Doc if they can be fitted to your door. Generally, if a burglar sees you have anti-snap locks and high security handles fitted they won’t bother with your property.
